Residential FAQ
How does the monitor store or communicate the data that is collected?
It sends data automatically when connected to a phone line. When it’s not connected to a phone line, it will hold 2 weeks worth of data.
Is a secondary test common after improvements are made to the system?
Some contractors do and we see major changes to the home with properly installed quality equipment.
Do contractors need specific training to be able to perform IAQ testing?
The HomeAdvice IAQ test is easy to perform, so it does not require any special certification. However, basic training is required in order to properly use the system. This training is provided by us to contractors who adopt the HomeAdvice program.
Does the unit test for Radon?
Yes, but it requires a radon monitor (sold separately).
Can we analyze the home for energy usage with the monitor?
Yes. The HomeAdvice monitor can be used an analyze the efficiency and operation of the current HVAC system, which is the largest part of energy usage in most homes.
How long does the test take to perform?
3-7 days is best practice
How long does it take to generate the report after the monitor data is downloaded?
After the information is filled out and the generate button is clicked, it only takes about 5-10 minutes.
What are the minimum and maximum number of days you can run a report for?
In order to get a good test, you should install and run the monitors for a minimum of 48 hours, and a maximum of 7 days.
How much does it cost for a contractor to generate a report?
Nothing. As a subscriber to the HomeAdvice program, it is part of the subscription cost.
Can the monitor be placed in a commercial application also?
Yes. Everything works the same. There is a Commercial Lite report for those placements. If you are interested in a more robust product for commercial markets, see BuildingAdvice.
How can I find someone in my area to perform a test?
There is a dealer locator section on the residential side of our website.
Should I do a second test after I have installed the equipment we sold?
It’s a good idea to show improvements. Be sure to use the same monitor and place it in the same location and if possible, place it the same days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday).
Can I connect the monitor to my laptop to download the information?
No. The device has to be connected to an analog phone line to transmit data.
Does the system test for mold?
Not specifically. It tests for conditions that would make mold growth more likely, but the test does not find existing mold.
Who would benefit from having an IAQ test performed in their home?
Everyone should ensure that they are breathing healthy air in their home. Testing is especially recommended in homes where there are young children or elderly people, people suffering from allergies or asthma, and in situations where you notice any of the common complaint issues mentioned above (see the “common IAQ complaints question” above.)
Can you tell me the specific VOC’s that are in my house?
No, but sometimes, based on the time of day that levels increase, we can get a pretty good idea of what might be causing the particular spike.
What are some common IAQ complaints from homeowners?
Some of the more common complaints indicating IAQ problems are: Stuffy air, musty or other odors, allergies, asthma, coughing, drafty air, and cold or hot spots in the home.
What does the HomeAdvice system test for?
Temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs, which are odors and chemicals), and particulates (dust and dander.)
