Kansas Contractor Gets Energy Star Recognition for Courthouse

McElroy’s Inc. , a mechanical, energy and plumbing provider, has completed the HVAC upgrades and project work resulting in an EnergyStar Certification for the Jackson County Courthouse in Holton, Kansas. After an energy evaluation by McElroy’s, the Courthouse received an energy performance rating of 99 out of a possible 100.

The EPA’s highest EnergyStar rating was awarded in March; Dan Beal, McElroy’s president, and Kristi Hubbard, energy efficiency manager, presented an EnergyStar plaque to Jackson County Commissioners and Teresa Scheidegger, Courthouse custodian.

“Since the changes, the Courthouse is using 35 percent less energy and 35 percent less pure greenhouse gases,” Hubbard was quoted as saying in The Holton Recorder. The Jackson County Courthouse uses 65% less energy than the national average for courthouses.

Though the 34,390 square foot building was constructed in 1921, the right upgrades have allowed it to perform better than 99% of its comparable buildings. The award follows the installation of a new heating and cooling system and new windows. The county spent $498,750 on the new heating and cooling system, and $130,000 to replace the Courthouse’s original windows.

As a result of McElroy’s project work, the Courthouse is enjoying a natural gas consumption savings of 58% and an annual cost savings of 26%.

“We’ve spent a lot of money on these renovations, but it’s paying off,” Scheidegger said in The Recorder.

Apparently there’s no stopping Hubbard now. The energy manager for McElroy’s recently told AirAdvice, “I am hoping to do some more work with the school district and a few of the local churches. I’ve already done a benchmark on the local bank in this community.”

McElroy’s enjoys this civic, sustainable win for Jackson County as a result of its Building and Energy Solutions team, which provides a detailed Energy Conservation Plan allowing companies to operate their mechanical systems at peak performance, while lowering operating costs. McElroy’s Building and Energy Solutions team consists of three licensed professional engineers, two automated controls technicians, service department manager / HVAC technicians, and a number of seasoned sales professionals. McElroy’s has three locations throughout Northeast Kansas, including Topeka, Manhattan and Lawrence. The company was founded in 1951 and has been run by three generations of family. McElroy’s serves business and residential customers.
